SUMRALL – Sumrall made quick work of Greene County to advance to the third round of the Class 4A playoffs.
How quick?
The Lady Bobcats invoked a mercy rule win with 18 minutes left as they defeated Greene County 8-1.
“I thought they came out focused and played well for the most part,” Sumrall coach Todd Siders said. “We still left some goals on the table. As the competition gets harder and harder, your opportunities get less and less. I want to see us convert on a higher percentage of those. We gave up a goal we shouldn’t have, and we can do that going forward, but overall, I was pleased.”
Southern Miss commit Addie Siders led the charge as she scored a hat trick and recorded a pair of assists. Two of Siders’ goals came in the first half, which led to a 4-1 lead for Sumrall (20-3-1) by halftime.
“She was really good today,” Todd Siders said. “She hit a couple of rockets today that were really impressive. I think when she committed to Southern, I think it was a bit of a monkey off her back a little bit. She’s playing a lot more free and easy right now, which is good for her. There is a lot of talent on this team.”
Rylee Kirkland put the Bobcats on the board with a penalty kick. Her sister Presley Kirkland then followed with an assist from Siders. From there, Siders scored the next three goals.
Then, in a 15-minute span in the second half, Ashton Stringfellow, Caroline Siders, and Presley Kirkland all scored to seal the win in the second half.
Sumrall now has five players that have scored 10 goals this season, with Rylee Kirkland and Stringfellow over the 20-goal mark.
“We have a lot of talent and a lot of attacking potential,” Todd Siders said. “If we put the ball at the back of the net on a 40% clip, then we are going to be really hard to beat.”
Sumrall will now travel to face Northeast Jones, who the Bobcats defeated earlier in the season 3-1.
“Northeast Jones is a very proud program,” Todd Siders said. “They are very physical and have a really good coach that played at a high level. It’s a great challenge. We’ve told them all year that it’s about the name on the front of our jersey and the way we play. We can’t be worried about who we are playing and all of that stuff. If we can play well then we are tough to beat.”
