Presbyterian Christian’s start to the season was forgettable to say the least as the Bobcats coughed up eight turnovers in the 43-17 loss to Simpson Academy last week.
However, after the fact, the Bobcats seem to have some positives come from the game.
“I was proud of their efforts,” PCS coach Bobby Carr said. “They showed a lot of character. They could have folded up. They didn’t, and I thought they fought hard and played hard all the way until the end.
“I think we’re only going to get better and will be a lot better by week four or five than we are now. I thought the biggest bright spot was our character. They didn’t give up, and they didn’t fold up.”
For starters, quarterback Ian Randolph, who broke his wrist with his non-throwing hand, could miss just four weeks.
“He’s such a good kid,” Carr said. “Sometimes bad things happen to good people. He keeps his head up and is still a leader and encourages the other guys.
“He didn’t have to do surgery. They were able to set it, but he’s in a cast right now.”
The Bobcats will hope to bounce back against Silliman, who opened the season with an 11-8 win over Columbia Academy. Last year, PCS defeated the Wildcats 42-2, while Silliman finished the year 2-9.
“It looks like they run a spread offense and will try to throw it around a little bit,” Carr said. “We just have to work on us getting better. We’ll be more prepared. With the mistakes we made, we’ll be able to correct them. Turnovers killed us. I don’t care what you do. You aren’t going to win when you make eight turnovers. So we’ll fix all of that. We made a few mistakes in the secondary as well. The mistakes we made I think, are easy fixes, so we should be okay.”
The main key for PCS will be if backup quarterback Cannon Crowder can lead the offense. Carr believes Crowder is capable of that as he showed flashes of success against Simpson Academy.
“I thought I saw some good things from Cannon. He just has to get a little more familiar with the offense,” Carr said. “But he’s got moxie you want to see in a quarterback. I think we’ll be okay there.
“Cannon is our No. 2 quarterback. We work two groups every day, so he’s gotten a lot of reps. He’s just got to get reps with (the first team). I’m sure he’ll be ready. He’s a good leader.”
Silliman will host PCS on Friday at 7 p.m.
