Oak Grove stayed undefeated last week after the Warriors defeated Hattiesburg 42-21.
As Oak Grove coach Drew Causey wanted to see, the Warrior offense clicked on all cylinders as they put up 385 yards of offense, with 254 coming from the air and 131 coming from the ground game.
“Offensively, we started playing a little bit better,” Causey said. “We played better than we did the week before.
“We want to keep getting better. One thing I was really pleased about last week was that we finally came out in the first quarter and got the ball and went down the field and scored. We felt like they have played well and have gotten better and better each week.”
Oak Grove will test its unblemished record again, against one of Louisiana’s best programs.
This week the Warriors will host John Curtis, which is the winningest program in Louisiana. The Patriots have won 27 state championships, the most recent being 2018, as well as a national championship back in 2012. Every year, Curtis features loads of talent and is led by legendary coach J.T. Curtis, who posts a career record of 605-76-1. Curtis is just under 20 wins away from being the all-time winningest high school football coach.
“They have won over 600 ball games,” Causey said. “Historically, they are a top program in Louisiana. It should be a lot of fun.”
This season John Curtis is off to a 2-1 start after losing 41-20 to Zachary, which is the reigning 5A state champions in Louisiana’s biggest classification as well as this year’s preseason favorite.
The Patriots run a signature veer offense. This season, John Curtis has rushed for five touchdowns and all five have come from a different player. At quarterback is Dagan Bruno, who has thrown for 185 yards and a touchdown and has run for 39 yards and a touchdown.
“They run (that offense) in the seventh grade, eighth grade, ninth grade, junior varsity, and varsity, so they run the same offense since they were little kids,” Causey said. “It’s a lot of guys, and they do a lot by committee. They are very good at what they do. We are going to have to know exactly where we need to be on defense.
“On defense, they line up in a split four and play a lot of Cover 3. They have a lot of talented players all around.”
Oak Grove hosts John Curtis on Thursday night with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
