High School
Oak Grove (3-2)
Oak Grove has won three straight after starting the season 0-2, defeating Laurel 42-3 on homecoming night. The Warriors host Houston High School (1-5) out of Germantown, Tennessee, before a blockbuster matchup next week against Petal.
Hattiesburg (3-2)
The Tigers finally got Tristen Keys back on offense, and they scored their most points of the season in a 42-16 rout of Meridian. Hattiesburg, now 3-2, has a bye this week before traveling to Jim Hill next Thursday.
Petal (3-2)
Petal, also winners of two straight, leaned on its defense in a 20-3 win over Clinton. The Panthers host West Jones (4-1) in the Pine Belt Sports Game of the Week.
Lumberton (1-2)
It has been a strange few weeks for Lumberton. Its game against Wesson was canceled due to inclement weather, and the Panthers were off last week. They return to action Friday against Perry Central (1-4).
Sumrall (4-1)
The Bobcats lost their first game of the season with a 28-24 defeat to Pearl River Central. Sumrall led 24-14 in the fourth quarter, but two late touchdowns by PRC sealed the loss. The Bobcats travel this week to face Seminary (2-3).
Forrest County AHS (3-2)
Forrest County couldn’t get out of its own way in a 34-20 home loss to Purvis. The Tornadoes used a stout defense to disrupt the Aggies’ offense throughout the night. FCAHS has dropped two straight after starting the year 3-0. The Aggies return home this week to face Moss Point (1-4).
North Forrest (1-4)
North Forrest’s struggles continued in a 13-0 shutout loss to Taylorsville. The Eagles have dropped four straight since their season-opening win. They open district play on the road at Collins (1-4).
PCS (3-2)
PCS defeated Bay High 28-7 on homecoming to get back into the win column. The Bobcats travel to St. Patrick (2-3) to open district play this week.
Purvis (3-2)
Brad Hankins’ team earned one of the week’s more impressive victories with a 34-20 road win at Forrest County. Behind a dominant rushing attack, the Tornadoes pulled away in the third quarter. Purvis has an open week before starting district play at East Central.
Sacred Heart (4-1)
Sacred Heart rolled past winless Wilkinson County to improve to 4-1. The Crusaders return home this week for a big district opener against East Marion (2-3).
College
Jones (3-2, 0-2 MACCC South)
Jones College snapped a two-game skid with a 38-28 Homecoming win over Holmes. Quarterback Jevarion Glover totaled 404 yards, passing for 335 and two touchdowns while rushing for another. Wide receiver TK Keyes had a big day with nine receptions for 239 yards and a score. Running back Ky’Yon Harris added 61 yards on the ground. Defensively, Arterus Moffett and Damond Williams paced the Bobcats, and punter Luke Stewart averaged 44.4 yards on seven punts. Jones has a bye this week before hosting Hinds on Oct. 9.
Pearl River (1-4, 0-3 MACCC South)
Pearl River gave No. 4 Gulf Coast all it could handle before falling 42-28 on Thursday night. The Wildcats led for much of the first half behind Keenan Franks, who rushed 31 times for 181 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Austin Jones threw two touchdowns to Howard Kinchen, while Moses Cummings added a late score. Gulf Coast seized momentum with 29 unanswered points in the second half. Jeffery Hopgood led the PRCC defense with 10 tackles. The Wildcats have a bye before visiting Co-Lin on Oct. 9.
Southern Miss (3-2, 1-0 Sun Belt)
Southern Miss closed non-conference play with a 42-25 win over Jacksonville State on Saturday night. Jeffery Pittman rushed for two touchdowns, while quarterback Braylon Braxton added two passing scores and a rushing touchdown as the Golden Eagles earned their first three-win September since 2016. Ian Foster sealed the win with a 49-yard interception return for a touchdown, his second pick-6 of the season. Jacksonville State’s Caden Creel ran for 161 yards and a touchdown in the loss. The Golden Eagles have a bye before visiting Georgia Southern on Oct. 9.
