High School
Oak Grove (2-2)
Oak Grove has seemingly gotten back on the right track after a 36-7 over a good Neville team. They had a dominant rushing attack after HC Causey had to replace most of its offense line from last season. The next two weeks seem winnable before a big game on Oct. 10 vs Petal. But first it’s another home game against Laurel (0-4) this week.
Hattiesburg (2-2)
Hattiesburg used a stout defensive effort and timely big plays to defeat Biloxi 23-6. Junior quarterback Gavin Ducksworth connected with Davion Young for two touchdowns, while the Tigers’ defense forced three turnovers and came up with a safety to set the tone. The Tigers are home again this weekend vs Meridian (2-2).
Petal (2-2)
After dropping two straight, Petal squeaked out a 25-24 win over Gulfport on the road. The Panthers host Clinton (3-1) for the first time in program history this week.
Lumberton (1-2)
Lumberton’s game vs Wesson was called off due to inclement weather and declared a no-contest. Lumberton also has an open week this week and will travel to Perry Central next weekend.
Sumrall (4-0)
In a bit of shocker, Sumrall dominated West Marion 41-21 on the road. The Bobcats are 4-0 for the first time since 2021 in Drew Granger’s first season. They have outscored their opponents 138-78 and have another winnable game this Friday vs Pearl River Central (3-1). They are 3-5 all time vs Pearl River Central, however.
Forrest County Agriculture (3-1)
Bo Russum lost his first game at Forrest County Agriculture this week in a 41-19 blowout loss to East Central on the road. The Aggies return home this week for a rivalry game against Purvis (2-2) before district play opens.
North Forrest (1-3)
After a nice opening win against Enterprise Lincoln, North Forrest has dropped three straight. This week a 21-18 loss to Enterprise Clark. The Falcons host Taylorsville (0-4) this week.
PCS (2-2)
The Bobcats lost a tough game at Seminary this week, 35-21. They return home this Friday against Bay (0-3), who’s coming off a bye week.
Purvis (2-2)
After a heartbreaking loss to Sumrall, the Tornadoes bounced back in a close game vs Long Beach 23-21. The Tornadoes travel south to Brooklyn for a big game against FCAHS (3-1).
Sacred Heart (3-1)
The Crusaders keep winning. After dropping their week one matchup, Sacred Heart has won three straight now with a 35-7 win over Resurrection Catholic. The Crusaders return home this weekend against Wilkinson County (0-4).
College
Jones (2-2, 0-2 MACCC South)
No. 14 Copiah-Lincoln capitalized on big plays from its defense and ground game to hand Jones College a 31-20 loss Thursday at H.L. Stone Stadium. The Wolves forced three turnovers, including a 47-yard fumble return for a score by Doug Nelson, and outrushed the Bobcats 160-36 to pull away in the second half. Jones quarterback Jevarion Glover threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns, but the Bobcats slipped to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in MACCC South play.
Pearl River (1-3, 0-2 MACCC South)
Pearl River stormed out to a 20-0 first-quarter lead behind two defensive takeaways and a balanced attack, but East Central roared back to claim a 37-27 win Thursday in Poplarville. The Wildcats got a pick-six from Jalen Anderson and two short rushing scores from Keenan Franks, yet turnovers and special teams miscues helped the Warriors seize momentum before halftime. Ian González threw for 92 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 102, and Franks topped 100 yards on the ground for the third straight game as PRCC fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in South Division play.
Southern Miss (2-2, 1-0 Sun Belt)
Southern Miss outgained Louisiana Tech and shut out the Bulldogs in the second half, but an early 30-10 deficit proved too much in a 30-20 loss Saturday in Ruston. Quarterback Braylon Braxton threw for 392 yards and two touchdowns, with Carl Chester hauling in 118 yards and a score, while the defense was led by Chris Jones and Michael Montgomery with 13 tackles apiece. The Golden Eagles (2-2) saw their two-game win streak snapped and will host Jacksonville State next weekend.
