Hattiesburg's Lenasia Drummond will go down as arguably the most decorated track and field athlete in school history.
The senior, who holds offers from William Carey and the University of Montevallo, concluded her career last Wednesday with 12 individual state championship titles as well as a team title she helped win back in 2021.
"It means a lot especially ending my high school career," Drummond said. "When I really think about it, I have done a lot. I've repeated the same process over and over."
For a third straight time, Drummond defended her titles in the 100-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump, and finished in third in the 300-meter hurdles, which helped the Tigers come away with a state-runner-up finish as a team.
"She has probably accumulated more titles than any other athlete I have coached since I have been here, and I've been here for 20 years," Hattiesburg track coach Charles Green said. "She's had a decorated career. She's put up some numbers and done some great things for the program. She took the program to a whole another level, but all good things must come to an end.
Dummond ran 14.67 in the 100-meter hurdles, jumped 18-02.05 feet in long jump and 37-08.05 feet in the triple jump.
Despite her success, Drummond had never planned to run track and field, as she only joined because her brother ran hurdles when she was a seventh grader.
"I used to dance, and then I tried to play an outside sport which was softball and that didn't work out because I got hit in the eye," Drummond laughed. "My brother used to hurdle, so I guess it's natural."
Green, who ran hurdles at Southern Miss, remembered how he convinced her to come run track back in the seventh grade.
"She used to come to meets and stuff with her mother," Green said. "I used to mess with her that if you are going to be here, then you might as well come out and run.
"Once she started, she kind of got hooked."
Drummond went on to win her first title that year as part of the state championship-winning 4X100 relay team.
Also winning a title for the for Hattiesburg girls team was the 4X400 relay which ran a time of 4:13 and consisted of Dadriaunna Walker, KaNia Lewis, Anbrie Johnson and Nyla Flowers.
The Hattiesburg boys track team finished in third place overall at the Class 5A state championship meet with the 4x100 team, which consisted of Kirus Darty, DeMarcus Baker, Duece Vance and Tabias Hinton, winning with a time 42.89.
