Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art and Boy Scouts of America, Pine Burr Area Council, are pleased to announce a Call for Artists to design and execute an exterior mural on one of the city’s most traveled routes. Professional local, regional, and national artists are encouraged to submit their original designs.
Concept proposals should follow the theme “Legacy in Service.” Artists are asked to submit engaging designs that pay homage to the profound contributions of Hattiesburg’s service members, while recognizing the pivotal role of BSA in shaping tomorrow’s community leaders. Project submissions should underscore an enduring commitment to service, with special consideration given to artists who incorporate past or present Hattiesburg-area service members into their design, including police, fire, medical, military, and scouts.
“Our vision with HAPA has always included intentionally honoring Hattiesburg’s history through new public art projects,” said Marlo Dorsey, CEO of VisitHATTIESBURG. “When completed, this mural will stand as a visual testament to the area’s unwavering spirit of service.”
Submitted mural concepts should incorporate ideas, people, and pillars relevant to Hattiesburg, including those of BSA such as character, development, and citizenship. Gender and ethnic diversity should be displayed in the design.
“This project is not just about honoring the city’s past; it’s about inspiring future generations to embrace the BSA values of service, leadership, and community,” said Zach Ross, CEO of Pine Burr Area Council. “Through this project, we aim to foster a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by service members and empower our youth to carry forward their legacy.”
The building façade faces Hardy St. and will measure more than 21 feet high and 22 feet wide once completed. Artist applications are due no later than Monday, May 20 at 5 p.m., and final design selection will be based on artistic merit, creativity, demonstrated ability, technical knowledge, overall budget, and the artist’s interpretation of the theme.
