Jane Granberry, a junior at Oak Grove High School, was named Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen during final competition Sunday afternoon at the Vicksburg Convention Center. Thirty-five young women from across the state competed in the pageant with preliminary winners named nightly. She is the daughter of Bill and Hermine Granberry.
Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen, in its 11thyear, gives teens an opportunity to experience the excitement of participating in pageant competition and to pursue theirs goals by preparing them to compete in the Miss Mississippi pageant.
Granberry, Miss Hattiesburg, tied for the talent phase of the competition with Miss Fairpark Madison Grace McCarter. Granberry performed a jazz dance number to Celine Dion’s “River Deep, Moutain High.”
Granberry told a reporter with The Vicksburg Post, that she wanted to do “something fun and upbeat and get everybody excited about being here.”
She also won the evening gown/on-stage question preliminary.
On Sunday, competition featured the Top 10 finalists who competed all over again before the winner was named.
Granberry accepted her crown, sash and flowers wearing a bright yellow gold evening gown.
Her platform was “Learn to Look It Up!” which involves helping children build a strong vocabulary which she feels is a vital component to strong reading skills. Her vision is to provide children with pocket-sized dictionaries to own and use to build their vocabularies.
Granberry plans on majoring in business and hopes to one day own her own business.
At OGHS, Granberry is on the All-A Honor Roll, Beta Club member, Mu Alpha Theta and a junior class officer.
