The Mu Gamma Lambda and Mu Xi chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. presented textbook scholarships to area high school seniors and honored local citizens for civic engagement at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast, held Jan. 20 at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus. The textbook scholarship, which supports the fraternity’s “Go to High School – Go to College” initiative, was awarded to the following recipients:
-Hattiesburg High School- Destiny Harrell, Amya Whigham and Dareon Dalton
-Oak Grove High School- Stevie Thompson
-Petal High School- Christopher Jackson
-North Forrest High School- Juan Campuzan Felipe
-Perry Central High School- London Bolton
-East Marion High School- Adrinae Aikens
-Wayne County High School- Keithen P. Nelson
-Laurel High School- Skylar Jones
Community award recipients include:
-Community Service Award – Rev. Kenneth Fairley of Mount Carmel Ministries
-Community Impact Award – Elisha Barnes Booth of Kuntry Kids and Sam Buchanan of Southeast Mississippi Legal Services
-Bridge Builder Award – George Stewart and Ricky Garner
-Humanitarian Award – Tony Vance
-Douglass T. Baker Memorial Award – Dr. Tammy Greer of American Indian Research Center at
Southern Miss
-John Hope Franklin Award – Norris Clark
This event honors the legacy of Dr. King by bringing together like-minded people to offer prayers of understanding and oneness of heart for the benefit of the community. It will also feature recognition of recipients of the fraternity’s Community Service, Community Impact,
Humanitarian, Douglass T. Baker and Friend of Alpha Phi Alpha awards, and presentation of
Academic Book Scholarships to local high school students planning to attend college.
