There was no shortage of notable performances last Friday with the area having six teams open their respective seasons with a victory.
Sumrall 38, South Jones 20
Sumrall jumped out to a 24-7 lead by the end of the third quarter before the Bobcats surrendered 13 points in the fourth. However, the game was highlighted by Sumrall’s successful passing attack as quarterback Landon Hawkins went 12 of 16 and tossed for 316 yards and three touchdowns and one interception. Jaycree Washington hauled in three catches for 92 yards and two scores, Jonathan Nelson had three catches for 112 yards and William Hodges had four catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. Hodges also came down with an interception, forced a fumble and blocked a field goal. Sumrall travels to face West Harrison next week, which comes off a 41-40 win over Greene County.
Oak Grove 49, Wayne County 0
The Warriors handed Wayne County the school’s worst loss since the school’s consolidation back in 1988 last Thursday. Quarterback AJ Maddox was 6 of 8 and threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns. The Warrior defense racked up five turnovers and scored three defensive touchdowns. Oak Grove travels to play Hoover, Alabama next week at 7 p.m. Hoover (0-1) opened its season with a 39-14 loss to Auburn.
North Forrest 36, Pisgah 0
The Eagles get their first season-opening win since 2010. Running back Cephus Pruitt ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns on six carries. North Forrest (1-0) travels to play Lumberton (0-1) next week.
Sacred Heart 28, St. Patrick 13
The Crusaders opened their season by winning back the Bishop’s Bell. Quarterback Kyron Murphey was 10 of 19 and threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns while running back DJ Booth ran for 136 yards and two scores. Sacred Heart travels to play West Lincoln, which opened its season with a 24-3 loss to St. Andrew’s Episcopal.
Purvis 27, Lumberton 12
The Tornadoes’ running back Moses Cummings was the difference in South Lamar County Classic as the junior ran for over 200 yards and four touchdowns. Lumberton quarterback Chase Toney threw for 140 yards and a touchdown as well as ran for a score. Purvis travels to face Pass Christian, while Lumberton hosts North Forrest.
Petal 34, Hattiesburg 27
Petal was led by a 3-touchdown performance from Cory Jackson while quarterback Dylan Causey threw for over 200 yards and two scores. Hattiesburg running back Tavares Wade accounted for 90 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries while wide receiver Tristen Keys had four catches for 153 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers travel to play Laurel, which lost to West Jones 24-16. Petal will also be on the road to face St. Martin, which opened the season with a 42-7 loss to Vancleave.
St. Stanislaus 31, FCAHS 6
The Aggies totaled just 224 yard in offense against St. Stanislaus. Terrance Horn led FCAHS with 58 yards on 15 carries and scored the team’s lone touchdown. Hayden Grice and Blaine Palmer each came down with an interception. FCAHS stays on the road and travel to play Long Beach, which opened its season with a 49-21 loss to Pass Christian.
Lamar 42, PCS 21
The Bobcats (1-1) return home and host Resurrection Catholic. Resurrection opened its season with a 29-26 victory against Bay High.
