Oak Grove 28, Hoover, Ala. 21 OT
Despite rainy conditions, Oak Grove (2-0) held off powerhouse Hoover in overtime. The Buccaneers are now 0-2 for the first time since 2014. Quarterback AJ Maddox hit Damari Jefferson for a touchdown in OT to win the game for the Warriors. Maddox finished 11-for-21 as he posted 177 yards and three touchdowns. PJ Woodland hauled in four catches for 129 yards and two scores. Malachi Henderson led the Warrior defense with 20 total tackles. Oak Grove travels next week to play crosstown rival Hattiesburg.
Petal 54, St. Martin 31
The Panthers shut out St. Martin in the second half and outscored the Yellow Jackets 21-0 to secure a 2-0 start to the season. Quarterback Dylan Causey was 15 of 22 and tossed for 263 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions while running back Kentrel Mickell ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 22 caries. Petal goes on the road to face Columbia (2-0), which defeated West Marion 57-0.
Sumrall 27, West Harrison 21
Sumrall (2-0) came out on top in a back-and-forth game that ended with quarterback Landon Hawkins connecting with Braelyn Harrison for a 7-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left to win the game. Hawkins finished 24 of 34 and threw for 309 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Running back Trevor Daniels ran for 100 yards as well as five catches for 69 yards and two scores. Jermiyah Parkman had 18 tackles and forced a fumble. The Bobcats return home to face Seminary (2-0) next week, which defeated Collins 41-14.
Sacred Heart 35, West Lincoln
Sacred Heart took a 35-0 lead by halftime and didn’t look back as the Crusaders moved to 2-0. Quarterback Kyron Murphey toosed for three touchdowns and 169 yards. Murphey connected with three different receivers for touchdowns while running back DJ Booth ran for 53 yards and a touchdown. The Crusaders and travel to play St. Andrew’s Episcopal (1-1), which lost to Enterprise 46-20.
FCAHS 28, Long Beach 17
FCAHS earned its first win behind the rushing attack of Terrence Horne and Omarion Reed. Horne ran for 191 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, while Reed scored three touchdowns and ran for 78 yards on 12 carries. The Aggies improve to 1-1 and will will host Vancleave next week. Vancleave (1-1) fell to Gulfport 51-14.
Hattiesburg 37, Laurel 28
Hattiesburg (1-1) overcame an early 12-0 deficit to win its second straight game in the Battle for the Lil’ Brown Jug. Running back Tavares Wade ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Demarcus Baker totaled 109 return yards and return a kickoff for a touchdown. Linebacker BJ Mitchell had a team-leading 11 tackles. The Tigers host crosstown rival Oak Grove next in the Battle for the ‘Burg.
PCS 35, Resurrection 0
The Bobcats move to 2-1 and will now prepare to head to Hartfield Academy in their conference opener.
North Forrest 52, Lumberton 21
The Eagles are off to their first 2-0 start since 2010, while Lumberton drops to 0-2 for a third straight season. North Forrest will host Purvis next week, while Lumberton hosts West Marion.
Pass Christian 35, Purvis 0
The Tornadoes dropped to 1-1 after the shutout loss. Running back Moses Cummings was held to 64 yards on 13 carries. Tommy Easterling led the Tornadoes defense with 10 tackles. Purvis will travel to face North Forrest.
