Camp Shelby hosted a change of command ceremony on last Friday morning to celebrate the passing of the torch of leadership from Colonel Lee Henry, the thirty seventh commander, to Colonel Ashley Sullivan. Henry was the first Perry County native to lead Camp Shelby, 70% of which lies in Perry County. Sullivan is the first aviation commander of the base and looks forward to many years of building onto the strong foundation Henry and those who came before him laid.
“Its timeless military history, the powerful memories we have, the future-focused vision are matched only by the pride and passion of our Camp Shelby team,” said Sullivan. “It’s really a spirit that I think and can always feel the moment that I enter the post. This is such a special place.”
In the time-honored tradition of passing the colors, the change of command was marked with a ceremony narrated by Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Adcock. Command Sergeant Major Carl Dean presented the base flag to Henry, who then passed the colors to Adjutant General of the Mississippi National Guard and former Base Commander, Major General Bobby Ginn. Ginn then passed the colors to Sullivan, marking the beginning of his command, before returning the flag to Dean to be returned to its place.
