Pearl River football came out swinging Thursday night, surging to a three-score lead, but East Central clawed back and escaped Dobie Holden Stadium with a 37-27 victory.
"Every week it's going to boil down to effort and execution," head coach Seth Smith said. "We did play hard, but we didn't execute. It's not where we want to be, but you either fight or die — and we're going to fight."
The Wildcats (1-3 overall; 0-2 South Division) opened the game on fire, piling up 20 first-quarter points. After punting on their first drive, the PRCC defense set the tone. Alandez Blaylock (Hattiesburg; Oak Grove) came flying off the edge and knocked the ball free from the Warrior quarterback, and Garrett Orgas (Vicksburg; Warren Central) pounced on it at the ECCC 10-yard line.
Two plays later, Ian González (Mexico City, Mexico; St. Stanislaus) floated a perfect pass into the corner of the end zone, where Howard Kinchen (Lafayette, La.; Patterson) went up and came down with the touchdown, making it 7-0.
The defense struck again on the next possession. With East Central moving the ball at the PRCC 32-yard line, Jeffrey Hopgood (Kiln; Hancock) tipped a pass into the air, and defensive lineman Jalen Anderson (Slidell, La.) hauled it in. Anderson turned upfield and sprinted down the sideline for a 66-yard interception return touchdown, stretching the lead to 13-0.
Following a three-and-out by the Warriors, the Wildcats marched 61 yards in 11 plays. González provided the spark with a highlight-reel 23-yard scramble that saw him spin out of a tackle and cut back across the field. Keenan Franks (State Line; Greene County) capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge, pushing the lead to 20-0.
The script flipped midway through the second quarter. East Central punched in a 1-yard touchdown, then blocked a punt and returned it 24 yards for another score. A 32-yard field goal just before halftime trimmed PRCC's lead to 20-17.
The Warriors carried that momentum into the third quarter, going 81 yards in nine plays and finishing with a 2-yard rushing score to take their first lead, 24-20.
The Wildcats responded with a resilient drive of their own. González escaped a near-sack and fired a dart to Franks for an 11-yard gain to extend the series, and Franks eventually finished it off with another 1-yard touchdown, putting PRCC back in front 27-24.
East Central answered quickly, as its quarterback scrambled 25 yards for a score to retake the lead at 31-27. The Warriors added one more touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the 37-27 win.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
González completed 9 of 14 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown while adding 102 yards on 12 carries. Franks surpassed the 100-yard mark for the third straight game, rushing 27 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
Cory Jackson (Petal) led PRCC's receivers with 41 yards, while Jackson, Kinchen, and Bishop McGruder (Gulfport) each hauled in three passes.
Daniel Pickens (Gautier; Resurrection) paced the defense with eight tackles and a pass breakup. Trace Carter (Ocean Springs) chipped in four tackles, two tackles for loss, and a breakup. Anderson capped his impressive night with a sack, a tackle for loss, a blocked field goal, and the 66-yard pick-six.
