Eyrthbeat Coffee Company, downtown Hattiesburg’s newest addition, brings a fun, artistic, modern twist to the traditional coffee shop. Complete with local art, board games, company merchandise, ice cream, pastries and options to satisfy every variation of coffee-drinker, Eyrthbeat is everything one could need in a coffee shop with an added twist- drums.
Eyrthbeat’s owner, Tony Lymon, is a Mississippi native, USM alumni, veteran professional percussionist, spent many years in a successful percussion-centric band, King Konga, taught band and percussion in Pine Belt schools and worked with Drum Corps International, “the NFL of marching bands,” serving as designer and artistic director for several of the organizations.
When Lymon began roasting his own coffee at home during the pandemic with a small roaster, he had no idea that his hobby would grow into a brick-and-mortar business in the heart of downtown.
“My family was getting really annoyed with me,” chuckled Lymon. “Once I started selling the beans online, I knew I had to keep up with production. So, I bought three more small roasters, and I found out pretty quickly that I had to put them on different breakers. I had coffee roasting in the living room, kitchen and the garage.”
The Lymon family’s patience paid off, and with the help of his daughter, Colette, to create the aesthetic, Eyrthbeat opened its doors on November 29.
Eyrthbeat features a unique blending of drums for décor, graphic artwork created by Lymon of his own drum heroes adorning the walls, brews named for percussion instruments from the country of the beans’ origin and even boats live music, bringing a funky and modern experience unlike anywhere else.
“I wanted to make my world work for me instead of me working for the world,” said Lymon. “I wanted to make something kind of funky, a little unconventional, but uniquely homey and cozy in in a different way.”
Eyrthbeat is located at 138A Front Street, across from the America Building, and can be found on Facebook or online at eyrthbeat.com.
