Tuning in to one of the cable news channels earlier this month, I caught a story on CNN where the statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee was being removed in Richmond Virginia, the state's capital. The 21-foot statue stood atop a pedestal along the city's famed Monument Avenue, noted for being lined with monuments to the Confederate States of America.

My mother's last living sibling was admitted to the hospital earlier this month. She lives in the tiny town of Leakesville, population barely 1,000, halfway between the Hub City and Mobile. Her birth name is Roslyn but to her nieces and nephews, she's always been our Aunt Sudie.

I recently returned from a tour of the American Southwest, which began with a stop in northern New Mexico, a state becoming reliably blue for the Democrats. Then it was on to Arizona, a state trending blue with Joe Biden winning its 11 electoral votes in the 2020 presidential election, Cyber Ninjas "audit" of those results notwithstanding.
