Southern Miss football has hired Marshall’s Charles Huff as its next head coach, sources told The Pine Belt News.
The source confirmed multiple national outlets reports from earlier this morning.
The move comes a day after that Huff led the Thundering Herd to a 31-3 victory in the Sun Belt Championship.
According to multiple sources, Huff is expected to meet the team at 1 p.m.
Huff's hiring ends a coaching search that has been ongoing since Will Hall's firing on Oct. 20. In four seasons, Hall finished with a 14-30 record.
Huff leaves Marshall after compiling a 32-20 overall record, including a 20-12 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. Under his leadership, the Thundering Herd became bowl-eligible in every season, with standout victories over teams like top 10 Notre Dame and Virginia Tech.
Despite the success, Huff did not receive a contract extension, with his deal set to end in January 2025. According to a source, Huff is expected to make at least $1 million, which is well over his $755,000 salary at Marshall.
Prior to leading the Thundering Herd, Huff was Alabama’s associate head coach and running backs’ coach under Nick Saban for two years.
The Denton, Maryland native also had previous stops at Mississippi State, Penn State, Western Michigan and the Buffalo Bills, all primarily coaching the running backs.
