Lumberton City Clerk Felicia Wheat Baskin met with persons living at Ellisville State School (ESS) community homes in the town as they delivered a proclamation for Lumberton Mayor Quincy Rogers to sign. The proclamation declared March as Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month for the City of Lumberton. In the proclamation, Mayor Rogers encouraged all citizens to support opportunities for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities in the city, including full access to education, housing, employment and recreational activities. The proclamation also stated that people with intellectual or developmental disabilities deserve the total support, respect and acceptance of all citizens of the City of Lumberton.
According to the proclamation, all citizens are encouraged to recognize the unique strengths and contributions of people with intellectual or developmental disabilities and acknowledge that they enrich the City of Lumberton and make it a better place to live for everyone. Ms. Baskin stated, “Our most valuable gems are those with super abilities like these individuals. We enjoy sharing our city with Ellisville State School and the awesome residents”.
Lumberton joins many other cities, organizations and agencies nationwide in observing March as Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
