The Tigers will play West Point Saturday in Oxford at 7 p.m. for the State Championship. It’s the first trip for Hattiesburg since 1998, while the Green Wave have defending 5A Champs and winners of 27-straight games.

The Hattiesburg Tigers’ senior class has been the backbone for the 2017 team. As ninth-graders, Hattiesburg had a 6-7 overall record with a first-round loss, and now the group of 28 seniors will lead a 14-0 region champion team into Ole Miss’ Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Saturday night.

Hattiesburg, West Point set for much-anticipated matchup

For both head coaches, Saturday’s 5A State Championship is nothing new.

Both Hattiesburg coach Tony Vance and West Point coach Chris Chambless have coached in multiple state championships. As head coaches, Vance was 1-1 while at Charleston and Chambless is 3-0 at the helm at West Point, including last season’s state title.
