At the close of 2020, there were an estimated 2,132 Southern Baptist churches in Mississippi, not counting a few that were in the process of splitting up over quarreling piano players, construction projects, or antics of the pastor’s children. During the past two years, I have spoken in 51 of these churches.

All across the United Kingdom, Brits are breathing a sigh of relief today that a “hard” BREXIT (British Exit) from the European Union will not occur on Jan. 1, 2021. Such an exit from the group of 28 countries making up the European Union would have resulted in trade barriers, travel restrictions, tariff issues and general chaos.

Christmas at Sea
By Benny Hornsby, READ MORE > 1,420 Reads
On Wed, 12/16/2020 - 04:00 PM

I was thinking the other day that I’ve spent at least 10 Christmases underway at sea or on a ship in a port so far away that even Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer couldn’t find it. It’s probably more than 10, but I rounded it off.

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS

Whatever your politics, at least Bruce Springsteen music fans now know after last Tuesday’s election results whether or not he will have to move to Australia. He had famously vowed to move there if his presidential candidate didn’t win.

‘Homeward Bound’ is a fantastic saying to anyone who wanders
By Benny Hornsby, READ MORE > 1,533 Reads

If I were down range in Afghanistan, I would be paying close attention to the November election because one of the presidential “tweets” last week promised to “bring all the troops home by Christmas.” And who wouldn’t want to be home at Christmas?

Last Kind Word
By Benny Hornsby, READ MORE > 1,259 Reads
On Wed, 10/07/2020 - 05:41 PM

I’ve been lauded and loathed, reviled and revered, commended and condemned, but all I ever wanted was a last kind word. I don’t know about you, but that’s what I remember. I was about 19, and the ship’s air search radar had fried itself, and everyone was running around in circles wondering what to do.

Dial ‘M’ for moving on

I was thinking how James Meredith, of integrating Ole Miss fame, said that “Mississippi was the most powerful word in the English language,” and this triggered a succession of Mississippi-related images in my mind, including the “Mississippi Bubble,” a speculative stock market disaster that plunged France into severe economic depression in 1720
