Area schools affected by MHSAA reclassificationBy CAMAL PETRO,
The Mississippi High School Activities Association released enrollment numbers of Mississippi high schools, leading to a reclassification for some athletic departments.
None of the eight schools in the PineBeltSPORTS coverage area are immediately affected, but region opponents will change for some teams. The change will take place for the 2019-20 academic year.
A team Hattiesburg is familiar with, West Harrison, will move up to 6A while Pascagoula drops back down 5A. While the regions aren’t set yet, it appears Pascagoula will just take West Harrison’s spot.
Germantown, Olive Branch and Lewisburg join West Harrison as the new 6A teams, while Columbus, Jim Hill and Provine are the new 5A teams with Pascagoula. Jim Hill has been a common opponent for Petal and Oak Grove.
In 4A, Stone and North Pike move down from 5A while East Central and New Hope enter 5A. Stone and North Pike are opponents for Hattiesburg in most sports.
Again, area teams in the 1A classification are staying put, but Sacred Heart is a few students shy of moving up to 2A. East Marion, a region opponent for the Crusaders and Lumberton, is set to make a move back to 2A.
Via Brandon Shields, regions and classifications will be set on Nov. 30.
Reported enrollment for area schools:
Oak Grove – 1,666 (6A)
Petal – 1,217 (6A)
Hattiesburg – 904 (5A)
Sumrall – 594 (4A)
Purvis – 575 (4A)
Sacred Heart – 199 (1A)
Lumberton – 155 (1A)
