Sacred Heart falls to North Forrest

HATTIESBURG – For a game that started out as a pretty good skirmish, the North Forrest visit to Sacred Heart turned into a real donnybrook by the time all things were done.

Rolling to a 42-12 lead in the fourth quarter, North Forrest coach Anthony Dillon decided to let some of his reserves take a turn. Just barely a minute later, Sacred Heart was knocking on the door, closing the gap to 42-26 and there was still 9:31 to play.

The NF Eagles (2-2), however, tacked on another score and kept the Crusaders (2-2) at bay to capture a 48-32 victory Friday at the Sacred Heart Field.

Sacred Heart coach Lonny Schraeder said he knew that his squad had been in a battle.

“The kids just never gave up,” he said after the game. “And that’s what we want. Like I keep saying, this is getting ready for a district play. If we can get out of here, we are not going to be surprised with this. We’ll be better and we’re just going to get better.”

For North Forrest, the bang-bang offensive style was no surprise for Schraeder, who said he spent the game watching the rushing of sophomore Ryhen Brisco – who carried 21 times for 161 yards and a TD, while catching six passes for 186 yards and two more TDs. Dillon said, “He’s a playmaker, but we’ve got to have other players step up too.”

The other side of the two-fisted punch was senior quarterback Daylyn Croom, who had 12-of-22 passing for 291 yards and four touchdowns.

Schraeder praised his players’ efforts.

“I’m proud of our kids,” he said. “They played four quarters. That’s what we asked of them. We were down by 30 points and still fighting. That’s what they expect of us as coaches and that’s what we expect of them as players.”

For Sacred Heart, one bright spot was the rushing attack of senior Campbell Klein, who carried 18 times for 125 yards and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Zach Weatherell aired out the pigskin, throwing 37 passes and completing 18 for 187 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite the 16-point victory, North Forrest’s Dillon said he saw plenty of room for improvement.

“I was not happy with our execution,” he said. “We’ve got to go back to the drawing board. We dropped too many passes tonight. Our offensive line was getting a lot of holding calls. That is not North Forrest football and we’ve got to correct that.”

The attempt to play more of his younger players when the score was wide backfired on Dillon.

“We actually tried to give some of the guys a breather,” he said. “We actually thought we had the game in the bag. We gave up some big plays, so we had to go back with our starters to try to slow them down.

“It was an ugly win, but we’ll take it,” he added. “We’ve got to get better.”
