HATTIESBURG– No. 22 William Carey men's basketball stayed undefeated in Southern States Athletic Conference action as IT defeated No. 8 Stillman College 73-69 Saturday afternoon at Clinton Gym.
In the first half, the Crusaders and Tigers went back and forth until midway through the half when William Carey went on a 15-5 run to go up 33-23 with just less than four minutes to play. Stillman rallied and cut the Crusader lead to 37-35 at the half.
The second half started off like the first, as both teams went back and forth until the Crusaders jumped out to a 49-41 lead highlighted by Brandon Cranford (Jr./Louisville)'s back to back 3s. However, the Tigers once again went to work erasing the Carey lead and with eleven minutes to play the game was tied at 54. Over the next nine minutes of play, the two teams traded baskets, but this time it was Stillman that took the 69-65 lead with two minutes left. Then it was the Crusaders turn to try and retake the lead and Cameron Douglas (Jr./Columbus) was up for the challenge as he scored six straight points to put William Carey up by 2 with just 30 seconds to play. On the final Tigers possession, the Carey defense held strong as the last second 3-point shot was off the mark to preserve the win.
WCU was led by Branden Sheppard (Sr./Shreveport) who finished the night with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Adrian Williams (Sr./Jackson) added 13 points and 7 rebounds while Cranford contributed 16 points.
William Carey is back in action Thursday as it’ll travel to Blue Mountain College. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
