The Forrest County AHS Aggies got back to solid defense and ball control as they beat Northeast Jones 14-3 Friday. Starting district play this week is a way to wipe the slate clean and make a playoff push. And coming off a win provides big-time momentum for the team.
“It feels good to have some confidence rolling into district this week,” Coach Brad Calcote said. “Defensively, the guys played extremely well. The defensive front jumped off the ball well and created some problems for their backfield.”
The defense only allowed Northeast Jones to score three points and held the Tigers to only 10 first downs in the contest.
This week the defense will need those same skills as they roll into division play with a tough matchup against Poplarville. The Hornets are 1-4 and have averaged 260 yards and 16 total touchdowns in five games. Three of their backs have 989 yards total with two of them averaging around 100 a piece.
“It’s incredible how impressive their (Poplarville) belief system is,” Calcote said. “They work hard and play hard. You can just tell they play with a lot of confidence and belief. That’s what we are trying to get to. They have fullbacks and wingbacks and running backs. Backs everywhere. That creates difficulties and we have to make sure that everyone on every play does his job.
“Doing your job” has been a message Calcote and his Aggies preach each day of practice and on game days since the season started. They look to keep that message strong as they move forward Friday. Calcote and his kids are pumped about this week’s matchup and the energy is about “10” on campus.
“Our kids are excited,” coach said. “Coming off of a win, then starting district play at home, we’ve gotten a little buzz going on around here. It’s definitely going to be a great matchup for us and we are ready for the challenge.”
With both teams using the running game as a primary weapon, the Aggies will heavily rely on the defense to continue the strong play that it’s shown in the defense.
“Execution and turnovers,” Calcote said. “If you can force turnovers and not commit any turnovers, usually you are going to be on the right side of things. With momentum, solid defense, and winning the turnover game, we think we are heading in the right direction.”
Game time starts at 7 pm at FCAHS.
