The No. 1 ranked women's soccer team from William Carey University defeated Thomas University 1-0, last Saturday afternoon at Crusader Field.
Going up against a potent Night Hawks defense that saw eight saves from the Thomas keeper, it was Itzayanna Gracia (SR/Tijuana, Mexico) who provided the game winning goal just a few minutes into the second half, as she netted her fourth goal of the season.
WCU dominated play all afternoon as they out shot Thomas, 18 to 4.
Carey is back in action Thursday, Sept. 19, as they travel to Lawrenceville, Georgia, to take on #25 Westmont College.
Kick-off is set for 4:00 pm.
MEN WIN, TOO
The No. 4 ranked William Carey Men's Soccer rallied for a 2-1 victory over LSU-Alexandria last Saturday night at Crusader Field.
The Generals struck first, with Andrez Joseph scoring in the 32nd minute to send LSUA into the break up 1-0.
Carey regrouped in the second half, as Pablo Varela Vasquez Frago (JR/La Coruna, Spain) tied things at one with a goal in the 52nd minute. With less than 20 minutes remaining in the contest, Guilherme Avila (SR/Alfenas, Brazil) struck what proved to be the game winning goal as he knocked home a pass from Frago.
The Carey defense did the rest as they limited LSUA to just one shot in the second half.
Last Thursday, the women improved to 6-0 on the season with a 3-0 home victory over SCAD-Savannah.
The Lady Crusaders capitalized on a SCAD foul, as Ana Paula Santos (JR/Sao, Paulo,Brazil) found the back of the net in the 15th minute to put Carey up 1-0.
Santos followed up the goal with her second goal in the 39th minute to send WCU into the break, up 2-0.
Silvia Leonessi (SR/Esbjerg, Denmark) would notch the third goal of the night for Carey in the 82nd minute for the final margin.
The three goals would be more than enough, as the Lady Crusader defense held the Bees to just one shot in the second half.
