Pearl River’s Ewing named MACJC Player of the Week

POPLARVILLE — For the third week in a row, a Pearl River Wildcat has been honored by the MACJC.

Center fielder Reece Ewing (Mobile, Ala.; Faith Academy) has been named the MACJC's Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Shemar Page (Raleigh) and Miles Smith (Laurel; Northeast Jones) were previously named MACJC Pitcher of the Week.

Ewing's honor comes on the heels of a breakout performance from Ewing as the No. 5 Wildcats (10-2 overall) went 3-1 with a home sweep over Baton Rouge and a road split against Coastal Alabama-South.

The freshman led all regulars by hitting .583 with two homers, two doubles, seven RBIs and four runs scored.

On the year, Ewing has hit .333 with three homers and 13 RBIs. His .639 slugging percentage is third among regulars.

In addition to getting it done at the plate and in center field, Ewing has excelled on the mound as well.

Ewing is 1-0 in three appearances with a 2.35 ERA. In 7 2/3 innings, Ewing has struck out 16 against 12 walks. His 18.78 strikeouts-per-nine is tops on the team.

The Wildcats continue to climb the national rankings. PRCC jumped up three spots to No. 5 in the NJCAA's Division II rankings, which were released Tuesday. PRCC is No. 4 in Prep Baseball Report's D-II rankings and No. 2 according to Noah Sharp's Juco Baseball Blog. Perfect Game's JUCO 25, which considers all programs regardless of division, has the Wildcats up to No. 21.

The Wildcats have a big weekend doubleheader awaiting them Saturday as they travel to No. 1 LSU-Eunice. The Wildcats will play Murray State College at 1 p.m. and then face the top-ranked Bengals at 4:30 p.m.

After a single road game against Spring Hill's junior varsity on March 12, PRCC opens its MACJC schedule March 16 with a matchup against Northeast at Dub Herring Park. The Tigers and Wildcats are set for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
