Board approves health  grant

The Petal School District will see a change in school kitchen equipment thanks to an $18,000 matching grant as a part of Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) Office of Child Nutrition’s “Health is Academic” initiative.

The Petal Schools Board of Trustees voted to approve the grant at a regular meeting last week.

The initiative was created to promote health and wellness in Mississippi public schools.

The goal of Nutrition Integrity 2016 is to replace deep fat fryers in school kitchens with Combination Oven Steamers in order to make a substantial difference in the number of calories and fat eaten by students at school.

In addition to that, the grant’s purpose is to promote and share information on the feasibility and cost of removing fryers and installing Combination Oven Steamers with other food service personnel in Mississippi schools; eliminate fried foods for a period of five years and provide healthier school meals, by reducing the amount of calories, fat, saturated fat and trans-fat served, to help students to become healthy, fit and ready to learn.
