Petal to hold Kindergarten Readiness Night, Round Up

By HASKEL BURNS,

It isn’t every day that a child enters kindergarten, so the Petal School District is working to make that transition as easy as possible for parents and students.

Two upcoming events – Kindergarten Readiness Night and Kindergarten Round Up – will give attendees a chance to get acquainted with the school system, as well as allow school officials to assess children’s skill levels.

The first event, Kindergarten Readiness Night, will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. April 23 at Petal Primary School, 60 Herrington Rd. in Petal. The event is aimed at parents with children 5 years and younger who will be entering kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year.

Parents will check in at the school’s gym before being assigned to a kindergarten teacher, who will explain the ins and outs of kindergarten.

“Petal High School’s tech department has helped us create some videos that we’re going to show to the parents, so they’ll kind of have a glance into what’s happening,” PPS principal Tessa Trimm said. “Then we’ll have a little light-snack supper.

“We’ll actually go on tour – parents’ children will be with them, and it’s a 15- or 16-point guided tour of the campus. So they’ll get to know all about the campus that night.”

School officials also will discuss summer registration, immunizations and everything else associated with kindergarten. Because a large turnout is expected for Kindergarten Readiness Night, attendees are asked to park at the back of the school, at the end of Stadium Drive.

Signup for the event is available at www.petalschools.com.

“We need parents and guardians of anybody that’s going to be coming to make sure to go to that link and sign up,” Trimm said. “If they don’t, we’re going to take walk-ins as they come in, but (registration) is just going to speed the process up because we’ll know how many are coming.”

Kindergarten Round Up will be held from noon-4 p.m. April 25 at Petal Primary School, and allows children to pre-register for kindergarten. Parents will be allowed to complete the pre-registration process while kindergarten teachers screen the students. Parents are asked to bring the child’s original certified birth certificate when pre-registering for kindergarten.

“It’s really important that they bring their children, because our teachers do conduct screenings – they do a speech screening and a vocabulary screening of those kids,” Trimm said. “Parents can go ahead and bring birth certificates, immunizations, social security card – everything they would need to pre-register their child to come to kindergarten for the next school year.

“So (Kindergarten Readiness Night) is an information night – Kindergarten Round Up is an actual pre-registration for kindergarten.

Children attending Mimi’s Playhouse, Playschool, Carterville, Asbury, C.H. Johnson Head Start and Oasis do not need to attend Kindergarten Round Up, as teachers already visit those sites for registration and screenings.
