Buy a ticket or two... Gift Card Tree valued at $1,500 to be raffled off at fundraiser

By BETH BUNCH,

Raffles support everything from cheerleaders and little league baseball teams to church building funds. But the Petal Education Foundation Gift Card Tree Raffle may rival them all. Currently at $1,544, the raffle includes gift cards to Pine Belt eateries, boutiques and other businesses.

And with tickets at just $5, that’s a pretty big bang for your buck.

The winning ticket will be drawn during this year’s Laughter and Lagniappe set for 6 p.m. April 25 at the Petal High School gymnasium. You do not have to be present to win.

Now in its 13th year, the event has outgrown its former digs at the Petal Civic Center and has moved to a larger venue to accommodate an overall overflow crowd.

Laughter and Lagniappe ticketholders will once again have a chance to enjoy Cajun food and fun while benefiting the students and teachers in the Friendly City.

The event will feature all-you-can-eat crawfish, potatoes, French bread and corn on the cob. Chicken strips will be available for those who aren’t mudbug fans, with white chocolate bread pudding for dessert. Individual tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Petal School District Central Office.

Master of Ceremonies Bob Palmer and Auctioneer Don Monroe, both Petal High School graduates, will entertain the crowd and offer up an array of auction items including pro sports memorabilia, hunting and golf packages, jewelry and more.

According to PEF Executive Director Leahne Lightsey, some special items to be auctioned include a redwood daybed swing, art, pottery, dinner for four at the White Pillars Restaurant in Biloxi with a limousine ride there and back, handcarved bowls and dinner for eight.

“The most important mission of the Petal Education Foundation goes far beyond fundraising to support student scholarships and teacher mini-grants,” said Valerie Wilson, PEF Board of Directors president. “The work of the foundation is as much friend raising as it is fund raising. Relationships are the most important thing the foundation can build. The relationships that the foundation creates will leave a legacy that will forever affect the lives of our children.”

Wilson said the PEF is an advocate in the community and a partner with the school district.

“Together with our community supporters, we strive to make the educational experience in Petal truly exceptional. Laughter & Lagniappe is an annual fun event that raises substantial funding for our organization. But it is more than that. It is an awareness campaign and a valuable tool in creating a bridge between the foundation and our community.”

The Petal School District Education Foundation was founded in 1987 and was one of the first education foundations in the state of Mississippi.

“A gift to the Foundation ensures the donor will pass on an enduring legacy to future generations of our community's children,” said Lightsey.
