Downtown restaurateur to take over SouthBound Bagel

By BETH BUNCH,

Nelson Haskin is making quite an investment in downtown Hattiesburg.

And the investment is getting ready to grow again as Team Haskin takes over SouthBound Bagel & Coffee Shop.

Christopher Hackbarth and Heidi Smith Hackbarth, who have run the shop located in the former California Sandwich Shop building on Front Street for the past 15 years, announced on their Facebook page Friday morning that they would be "proudly passing the (bagel) torch to Haskin and his family."

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who has supported us over the years,” read the message. “You started as customers and have turned into family. We also owe many thanks to the tireless efforts of the late Bernice Linton, Linda McMurtrey, and Betsy Rowell. Because of their support of and love for Downtown Hattiesburg, we were able to be part of the downtown revitalization 15 years ago.”

They assured customers that SouthBound was not closing, just transferring hands.

The Hackbarths also alluded to possibly another adventure on their horizon.

Since April 2017, Haskin has opened Blu Jazz Cafe and Nellie’s Chicken & Daiquiris, both on Front Street, giving them the best of both worlds – the plain and the simple and the more upscale. Now, they’ll tackle the breakfast crowd.

Nellie’s, with its “funky” chicken wearing sunglasses logo, opened just three months ago, offering chicken strips and daiquiris.

On Nov. 5, Blu Jazz opened its doors for lunch with a pared-down menu featuring a nice assortment of dishes, including a shrimp poboy.

Blu Jazz is located at 103 East Front Street, Hattiesburg, while Nellie’s Chicken and Daiquiri is located at 213 East Front Street, Hattiesburg. SouthBound Bagel is at 217 East Front.
