Andrews resigns from Mississippi House amid quarrel with Gunn

Representative Billy Andrews of Purvis has resigned from the Mississippi House of Representatives, about two months after indicating Republican House Speaker Philip Gunn is going against state law by blocking him and other members of the Legislature from receiving their state government pensions while serving in the House.

School officials: No closures, mass athletic event cancellations planned

Local school districts are not planning closures or mass cancellations of athletic events at this time.

According to the Mississippi Department of Education, schools are required to consult state health officials – along with the county health department – to determine when it is appropriate to close a school.


Hattiesburg mayor orders restaurant dining rooms, entertainment venues to close; public gatherings limited to no more than 10 people

Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker issued an executive order Saturday that shuts down restaurant dining rooms, closes entertainment venues and restricts public gatherings to no more than 10 people.

The executive order, 2020-2, goes into effect at midnight. It has the following provisions:


Delgado concerned about low wages and working conditions at Maximus call center

Hattiesburg City Councilwoman Deborah Delgado was recently joined by church leaders, activists and workers from the Maximus call center in delivering a letter of concern to Hattiesburg’s Cloverleaf Mall location, where workers have raised concerns over low pay, poor treatment and inadequate health benefits, among other issues.
