Fred’s closes remaining stores as it files bankruptcy

Discount retail and pharmacy chain Fred’s Inc. is filing for bankruptcy and closing its stores over the next two months.

While stores in Hattiesburg and other Pine Belt area venues have closed, the Purvis story at the intersection of Hwy. 11 and U.S. 589 has remained open. That will change with this latest development.

I had a couple of Asian-American classmates at Hattiesburg's Blair High School, but all in all, ours was not much of an international city. Boy, has that ever changed.

Wildcats move into first place with sweep over Gulf Coast

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College put together a couple of efforts suitable for framing Tuesday against Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The 18th-ranked Wildcats moved into sole possession of first place in the MACJC baseball standings by sweeping a doubleheader from No. 20 Gulf Coast with a pair of 6-2 triumphs.
