Officials break ground on upcoming building at Hattiesburg High

School, city and other local officials didn’t let steady rainfall Monday morning dampen their spirits during a groundbreaking for the upcoming building at Hattiesburg High School that will host 12 new classrooms, an administrative office, three additional special education classrooms and HVAC upgrades.



Son of former sheriff facing simple assault charges

The son of former Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee will soon appear in court to face a charge of assault by attempt of physical menace with fear or threat/simple assault.

According to documents from Hattiesburg Police Department and Hattiesburg Municipal Court, Forrest McGee is scheduled to come before the court on Feb. 12.

Alcohol sales at USM football games garners $100,000

In the summer of 2019, the University of Southern Mississippi decided to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages at football games and other sporting events.

To be clear: Only beer and wine are being served to people under the auspices of the USM banner, at the university’s games. Liquor is a different issue altogether.

A Family Man: Southern Miss Social Work’s Tim Rehner built relationships, shaped lives

Tim Rehner knew only one soul in Mississippi when he moved here, but he has spent 25½ years in Hattiesburg and Petal surrounded by family.

First there are his wife, Kay, and daughters Kendra, Kathryn and Karolyne. Eventually, two sons-in-law and two grandsons followed, and now there is a third son-in-law-in-waiting.
