Lamar County School District officials are hoping an emergency declaration for the softball complex at Sumrall High School will expedite that site’s recovery from the EF3 tornado that barreled through the area in December, tearing off the backstop, knocking down the bleachers and sending pieces of lumber through the building.

With the new year comes a slightly higher paycheck for city employees in Purvis, as the Purvis Board of Aldermen recently voted to institute a 3 percent raise for employees across the board.
Mayor Roger Herrin said the raise, which was approved at the Jan. 7 board meeting, is a measure that city leaders try to institute every year.

Hattiesburg High School junior Owen Sayre was recognized with a Certificate of Excellence at September’s Hattiesburg Public School Board of Trustees regular meeting for achieving the top score on Advanced Placement (AP) exams in Microeconomics and United States Government and Politics.

The Hattiesburg Tigers had just clinched the school’s first state baseball championship since 2006, and it was the first title of Hartfield’s head-coaching career. PURVIS – Senior Kennedy Hudson joined rare company earlier this season by eclipsing the 1,000-point club in her Lady Tornadoes career, but her final five points were a little tougher to get than the first 995.
“(Joining the 1,000-point club) showed that the hard work over the past three years had paid off,” Hudson said.
