House divided? Lamar County legislator may have to step down or risk losing state pension

A local member of the Mississippi House of Representatives is considering resigning from his newly-elected position because of his belief that Republican House Speaker Philip Gunn is going against state law by blocking him and other members of the Legislature from receiving their state government pensions while serving in the House.

Michael Watson, Mississippi’s new secretary of state, has not yet convinced us that giving his agency responsibility for issuing and renewing driver’s licenses is prudent.

Fourteen distinguished alumni of Hattiesburg’s city schools will be inducted into the inaugural HPSD Foundation Hall of Fame during a two-day event Oct. 4-5.

Inductees for the first-ever Hattiesburg Hall of Fame class come from the fields of business, politics, education, medicine, entertainment, journalism and sports.
