Hattiesburg has five “B” rated schools for first time ever

The Hattiesburg Public School District is excited to have five of the district schools receive a “B” rating in this year’s Mississippi Statewide Accountability System. Grace Christian, Hawkins Elementary, Thames Elementary, Woodley Elementary and Burger Middle School were all named High Performing Schools.




Hattiesburg continues with eminent domain for new U.S. 49 fire station

Hattiesburg City Attorney Randy Pope is following up on the eminent domain measure to acquire land on U.S. 49 for the purpose of building the city’s ninth fire station, as Hattiesburg City Council members recently authorized Pope to deposit $87,750 into the court registry in advance of a November trial on the matter.

I had a couple of Asian-American classmates at Hattiesburg's Blair High School, but all in all, ours was not much of an international city. Boy, has that ever changed. 




Fred’s closes remaining stores as it files bankruptcy

Discount retail and pharmacy chain Fred’s Inc. is filing for bankruptcy and closing its stores over the next two months.

While stores in Hattiesburg and other Pine Belt area venues have closed, the Purvis story at the intersection of Hwy. 11 and U.S. 589 has remained open. That will change with this latest development.
