A Vision for Veterans: USM grad eyes Hattiesburg-based retirement community for those who served

She was mostly raised by her great-grandmother and her Vietnam War veteran grandfather. Now, she wants to open a retirement home for elderly veterans.

Her name is Amber Travis. The name of the facility will be Grace’s Home of Heroes.

When I was a kid, there were very few residents of Hispanic origin here in Hattiesburg. We were a city of, basically, blacks and whites. I had a couple of Asian-American classmates at Hattiesburg's Blair High School, but all in all, ours was not much of an international city. Boy, has that ever changed.

Tom Kimmel returns to Back Door

On Friday, Dec. 7, The Back Door will welcome long-time friend and neighbor singer/songwriter/poet Tom Kimmel. 

A Nashville music veteran for three decades, Kimmel's music has been used to score major films, as well as being recorded by such luminaries as Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Cash and Nanci Griffin, among many others.
