When I was a kid, there were very few residents of Hispanic origin here in Hattiesburg. We were a city of, basically, blacks and whites. I had a couple of Asian-American classmates at Hattiesburg's Blair High School, but all in all, ours was not much of an international city. Boy, has that ever changed. 




Fred’s closes remaining stores as it files bankruptcy

Discount retail and pharmacy chain Fred’s Inc. is filing for bankruptcy and closing its stores over the next two months.

While stores in Hattiesburg and other Pine Belt area venues have closed, the Purvis story at the intersection of Hwy. 11 and U.S. 589 has remained open. That will change with this latest development.

Sumrall earns first win over Purvis since 2007

SUMRALL – With the Sumrall Bobcats holding on to a touchdown lead, the Purvis Tornadoes had a chance to tie the game after recovering a fumble in the second quarter by Sumrall senior quarterback Dannis Jackson.  However, Sumrall’s senior defensive lineman Solomon Landrum shifted the tide with a fumble recovery of his own – the Bobcats’ 15th tur
