Twenty-eight home games, along with hosting the Conference USA Tournament, highlight the 2022 Southern Miss baseball schedule which was released Thursday afternoon by coach Scott Berry.
The Golden Eagles, which finished the 2021 campaign with a 40-21 record and a trip to their 17th NCAA Tournament which had them make the regional final in Oxford, play 27 games this season against 11 different teams that finished in last year's Top 100 RPI by WarrenNolan.com.
Seven of those, Mississippi State (No. 2), Ole Miss (No. 11), Old Dominion (No. 13), Louisiana Tech (No. 29), Charlotte (No. 34), Alabama (No 36) and Dallas Baptist (No. 42), finished in the Top 50.
Southern Miss opens the campaign by playing seven of its first eight games at home, including a three-game series against North Alabama, Feb. 18-20, during the opening weekend. The Golden Eagles will then play a pair of midweek games against South Alabama – Tuesday, Feb. 22 at home and Wednesday, Feb. 23 in Mobile - before entertaining Jacksonville State at Pete Taylor Park (Feb. 25-27) during the second weekend.
The Golden Eagles then begin a stretch of four-straight road games as they travel to Pearl to face Mississippi State at Trustmark Park (Mar. 2), before heading to Sun Belt Conference foe Louisiana (Mar. 4-6) for a three-game set.
Berry's squad follows that with a pair of home midweek affairs against South Alabama (Mar. 8) and Tulane (Mar. 9), before returning on the road for a non-conference weekend series at Dallas Baptist (Mar. 11-13).
A single home contest against Alabama (Mar. 15) is the final game before the Golden Eagles open Conference USA play against Florida Atlantic (Mar. 18-20) at The Pete.
After playing eight, four-game series last season with the Golden Eagles and Louisiana Tech playing eight times, Conference USA returns to its traditional three-game weekend series with the Golden Eagles facing 10 league opponents for a total of 30 conference games.
Other league home series for Southern Miss include Louisiana Tech (Apr. 1-3), Rice (Apr. 22-24), Old Dominion (May 6-8) and UTSA (May 13-15), while facing WKU (Mar. 26-27), Charlotte (Apr. 8-10), FIU (Apr. 14-16), UAB (Apr. 28-May 1) and Middle Tennessee (May 19-21) on the road.
Other non-conference midweek home contests include Southeastern Louisiana (Apr. 12), New Orleans (Apr. 20) and Ole Miss (May 11). The Golden Eagles also go on the road to face UNO (March 22), Ole Miss in Pearl (Apr. 5), Tulane in New Orleans (Apr. 19) and Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond (Apr. 26).
The top eight teams from the C-USA regular season will then meet in Hattiesburg, May 25-29, for the league's baseball championship tournament. The Golden Eagles have won two of the last three tournaments held and had a string of four-straight championship game appearances snapped last spring.
