USM Golden Eagles
Southern Miss rides a two-game win streak headed into Saturday night’s Conference USA football game against Louisiana Tech at Ruston, La.
The Golden Eagles defeated UTEP 24-0 last week and beat UTSA 31-29 the week prior.
HATTIESBURG – Southern Miss redshirt junior running back Tez Parks enjoyed a bit of a breakout game in last Saturday’s 24-0 shutout of UTEP.
Parks, the LaGrange, Ga., native, missed the first three games with an injury and had seen limited duty in his first two games back with 17 yards on five carries.
HATTIESBURG – Southern Miss did get the win over the winless UTEP Miners, but it wasn’t pretty.
The Golden Eagles’ offense missed three great scoring opportunities in the first half, but thanks to the USM defense, the 24-0 score was good enough to push USM’s record to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Conference USA.
Southern Miss celebrated a big win last week and hopes to celebrate again this week when it hosts UTEP in its 81st homecoming football game.
Last week, the Golden Eagles came from behind to beat previously undefeated UTSA 31-29 in San Antonio, Texas, in a game in which Keon Howard quarterbacked in place of the injured Kwadra Griggs.
HATTIESBURG – On the strength of his third consecutive 100-yard rushing game and longest scoring run in school history in Southern Miss’ 31-29 victory over UTSA last Saturday, senior running back Ito Smith collected his second Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week award.
When redshirt sophomore Drake Dorbeck stepped on the field last Saturday at UTSA, it felt like the first game of the season for him.
“I was nervous all week, because that was my first full game to ever play at the college level,” Dorbeck, a Vicksburg native, said. “It was like the first game of the season for me.”
