Lady Bobcats clinch division; JCJC men post victory

MERIDIAN – Mary Margaret Parker (Sacred Heart) scored in the 87th minute to lift the Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats to a 2-1 victory over Meridian Community College here Tuesday evening.

The win clinches the MACJC South Division title for JCJC. The Lady Bobcats are now 8-1-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the division.

In the men’s game, the Bobcats outscored the Eagles, 5-3. JCJC is now 6-7-1 overall and 2-5 in the division.

JCJC ends the regular season on Oct. 17 at Pearl River. The Lady Bobcats will play a 3 p.m. scrimmage on Friday at Mississippi College.

Meridian travels to Mississippi Gulf Coast on Friday.

The MACJC/Region 23 Tournament will be held Oct. 28-29 at the site of the North Division women’s champion.

Lady Bobcats 2, Lady Eagles 1

JCJC had to come from behind to post the win.

Celeste Boutwell scored for MCC in the 7th minute to make it 1-0.

Parker scored on an assist by Judith Verdaguer (Barcelona, Spain) in the 80th minute to tie the game at 1-1.

Parker’s game-winner came on assist by Angel Ryals (Brandon).

Mia Holmes (Brandon) was in goal for the first half and Caroline Runion (Madison Central) played the second half for JCJC.

The Lady Eagles are now 4-10-1 overall and 1-5 in division play.

Bobcats 5, Eagles 3

JCJC broke a 1-1 tie with four goals in the second half to defeat Meridian.

The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute when Davis Gibson (Sacred Heart) scored off an assist by Thomas Carlile (Athgarvan, Ireland). MCC’s Pedro Dutra tied it in the 38th minute off an assist by Thallison Alex.

Dalton Morgan’s (South Jones) goal in the 46th minute off a Callum Dougan (Ballynahinch, Ireland) assist put Jones up 2-1. Carlile scored in the 50th minute off an assist by Lucas Middleton (Hemsworth, UK) to give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead.

The Eagles came back with a goal by Casey Ulmer off a Josh Cochran assist in the 53rd minute. MCC tied it at 3-3 in the 60th minute when Dutra scored.

But the Bobcats regained the lead quickly with Dougan scoring off a Carlile assist in the 61st minute. JCJC scored the final goal in the 85th minute when Kreider Henderson (North Pike) scored via a Carlile assist.

Michael Godley (Starkville) played the entire game in goal for the Bobcats.

The Eagles are now 0-12-2 overall and 0-5-1 in division play.
