Just three months after the death of Petal’s first city attorney, Tom Tyner, the Petal Board of Aldermen dedicated the board room at City Hall as the Thomas W. Tyner Municipal Board Room, at the request of Mayor Hal Marx.
Members of Tyner’s family were present to accept the proclamation, and a plaque with his photo was hung outside the door of the board room.
Tyner served the city for 43 years, and Marx says he was one of Petal’s “Founding Fathers.”
"Tom Tyner was a great friend to the City of Petal,” Marx has said of Tyner. “He was one of our city's Founding Fathers. Tom's experience was invaluable to me, personally, and to each of the mayors and aldermen who have served since 1974.”
“Tom was short in stature, but he was a giant in legal circles. I trusted his advice and felt confident that he had the best interests of Petal in his heart. As a person, Tom was one of the nicest men I have known. He was kind and gracious. He loved to joke and to tell stories. It really is impossible to measure his contributions to the City of Petal, for there are so many."
In other action, the board:
• Approved the minutes for the public hearing and the regular meeting of Nov. 7;
• Approved a request to set a special exception hearing date of Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. for property located at the end of Broken Arrow Trail;
• Approved a request to accept the privilege license report for October 2017;
• Approved lights at Petal River Walking Trail at a cost of $16,122 for installation and an estimated $500 per month;
• Approved a request to accept the Planning Commission recommendation to deny the zoning change for 200 E. 8th Ave. from C2 to R4;
• Approved a request to accept the Planning Commission recommendation to deny the special exception allowing a mobile home to be placed on the property located at 116 Denham Dr.;
• Approved a request to dispose of two recliners and two accent chairs in the Fire Department;
• Approved a request to accept a Can Am Defender side-by-side as a loaner for a period of 12 months. The city will pay for insurance and maintenance costs only;
• Approved a request to refund cash bond in the amount of $1,079 to Jeff Martin;
• Approved a request to accept the proofs of publication;
• Approved a request to adjust water services billed to 117 Watts Dr. in the amount of $504.33 due to a leak;
• Approved a request to accept the resignation of Susie Byrd in the Police Department effective Nov. 23;
• Approved a request to hire Cathy Mardis full time as Public Works administrative assistant at a rate of $10 per hour effective Wednesday, Nov. 22;
• Request to transfer Brent Chennault from shift work to 80-hour pay period as Fire Life Safety Educator Officer at a rate of $17 per hour effective Dec. 6.
